Piononos Sweets – The pionono is a type of cream sponge cake soaked in syrup. It has a toasted crown that hopes to represent the silhouette of the cylindrical head of Pope Pio the ninth (the name of the Pope at the time), a monumental figure of his time. Ceferino Isla, very devoted to the Virgin de la Angustias, created this exquisite dessert in 1897 because he wanted to make homage to the Pope that spoke proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate??? conception of Maria, that was not other than Pio IX or Nono. If you want to try these exquisite typical desserts, resort to some patisserie or bakery of the city, and sweeten your day.

Romanilla Plaza – If you are in need of refuge from the summer sun or looking for a pleasant spot to watch the world go by visit Plaza de la Romanilla. The square provides great views of the cathedral tower, and is also a favourite of the local street musicians. It’s neighbouring plaza nearby to Calle San Jeronimo, is the less expensive of the two and offers a younger crowd. Check out Meridional for a plate of healthy tapas or delicious moussaka! Closed on Mondays.

El paseo de los tristes – An afternoon spent walking along The Rio Darro is an afternoon well spent in our opinion. The cobbled streets meander along the course of the river alongside the monasteries. You can visit the Archeological Museum (Tue-Sat, 9.30 am – 8.30pm. Sun 9.30 – 2pm. Tickets 1.50 €) on your journey and if feeling peckish you can purchase homemade biscuits, wine and cheese from the nuns living within the monastery walls.

Silla del Moro – The Albayzin is scattered with bars, sometimes hidden in the most unlikely corners.
