Another beautiful Andalusian city that you have to visit is Malaga. Situated on the coast, Malaga is one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations, due to its natural beauty and the dozens of beaches which stretch along the coast on either side of the city. A return ticket from Granada only costs just under €23 and is well worth the money.

View of Malaga

What To See:

The Alcazaba: Another famous old Moorish fortress built on a hill. The architecture is not as lavish as the Alhambra but the fact that the majority of it has not been restored gives it a magical touch. The views of the city from the towers are also brilliant.

The Cathedral: Another breathtakingly beautiful cathedral situated at the heart of Malaga’s old town. It is free to enter and it is a must see while you are here

The Picasso Museum: Check out the work of one of the famous artists in history in his home city. You can also visit Picasso’s place of birth which is only a short walk from the museum.

The Bullring: You can see the bullring stand out from every viewpoint in Malaga. It is separated from the coast by a line of high-rise apartment buildings and symbolises the mix of the old and new in Malaga.

La Malagueta & The Port: For a city beach, La Malagueta gets the job done. It is quite a big beach and it is sandy unlike the beaches closer to Granada. Walk along the beach towards the port and Muelle Uno, a line of shops and cafes which overlook the port. Here you can relax by the sea and marvel at the ships coming in and out of one of the oldest ports still in use in the world today.

How can you get involved in Andalusian culture and relax at the same time? Visit a traditional Arab Bath (Hammam) while you’re in Granada. The main Hammam is said to be built over the same Arab Baths used by the Moors when they ruled Granada thousands of years ago. The Hammam is supposed to be the ultimate relaxing and body-cleansing experience.

The 'Hot Room' In The Hammam

You start off in the ‘Warm Room’, then go to the ‘hot room’ and then try the ‘cold room’. Then you can use the traditional steam room and relax with some mint tea. The building itself is beautiful and very Moorish in its design, with intricate details and tiling that are reminiscent of the Alhambra. Sit back and relax in the traditional baths while listening to soothing Arabic music, drinking tea and smelling beautiful natural aromas that will put you at ease. You will feel completely refreshed and relaxed once the experience is over and will probably want to try it again. If you want to treat yourself even more, you could also book a traditional massage as part of your experience. The massages vary from a basic massage to a traditional Moorish full body massage.

Hola a todos! Granada is a hub of cultural activity, be it Spanish or Andalusian, this city has plenty to offer. The month of June is a very big month of cultural activities and celebrations as it is the month when the Corpus Christi Festival takes place. Here are some activities taking place in the first half of June that you can be a part of.

Watch Films For Free Outside Granada's Cathedral

Cines Del Sur – Festival De Granada

This is a big film festival which showcases films and dramas from all around the world. It is more of a global cultural experience as opposed to a typically Spanish tradition; however, it is still very interesting and can open your mind to new things. There are two venues which are hosting open screenings so you can check out what’s on offer. They are in: Plaza De Las Pasiegas (pictured above, outside the Cathedral entrance) and Corral Del Carbon. There are also venues with exclusive screenings that charge a small entrance fee. You can check out what’s on here: http://www.juntadeandalucia.es/culturaydeporte/cinesurgranada/?lang=en

https://www.facebook.com/GranadaCinesdelSur?v=wall

Patrimonio Flamenco Primavera 2014

You cannot visit Granada without going to see an authentic Flamenco show. The Teatro Municipal la Chumbera is a famous venue in the Sacramonte district of Granada and it hosts a flamenco show every Saturday. Tickets are very affordable (starting at 6 Euros) and you can watch some of the most famous flamenco dancers in Granada in a breath-taking setting behind the Alhambra.

You can find more information here: http://www.granada.org/inet/wagenda.nsf/wwcetod/Teatro%20Municipal%20la%20Chumbera

Aljibe del Rey – Classical Music and Literature

Every Wednesday in June and July, there will be special events taking place at this historical site in the Albaicin district of Granada. The Aljibe del Rey was a historical cistern used by the Moors in Granada and the poems and music performed at these events will be in reference to their surroundings and history. The entrance is free until all seats are taken and you will be able to relax in a beautiful surrounding whilst listening to intimate poetry and music that will enhance the experience.

Hola a todos! So, we all know that Spain is a beautiful country; therefore there are many options when it comes to choosing a city to try and learn Spanish in. At Itinere Hostel, we have a sister language school where we can offer Spanish courses. We can offer you a competitive deal if you book a Spanish course with us and stay in our hostel. First things first though, here are some reasons as to why you should learn Spanish in Granada.

Amazing View of Granada

Educational Reasons:

The Andalusia region is the heart of everything Spanish, as it is where tapas, flamenco and bullfighting came from

Granada is still culturally very Spanish unlike the bigger cities of Madrid and Barcelona. People still have siestas here!

There are no other official languages spoken in Granada, (I.e. Catalan in Barcelona) so you are less likely to get confused

Granada is one of the cities where you can still clearly see the historic mix of cultures and religions in Spain’s history

There is a high possibility of finding people to do a language exchange (intercambio) with

Plenty of Flamenco To See In Granada

Social Reasons:

Granada is a beautiful city with a warm climate and amazing scenery, as it is surrounded by mountain ranges and the Sierra Nevada national park

There are amazing beaches just over an hour away and the Sierra Nevada ski resort is also close-by. You can spend one day skiing in the mountains and then the next day getting a tan at the beach!

Thanks to its large student population, there are plenty of student events you can go to

People in Andalusia do love their fiestas. There is always something going on and you can enjoy the celebrations with the locals.

Granada is one of the only places in Spain where you can get a free tapa with your drink. It doesn’t get much better than that!

We Also Organize Language Exchanges In Our Hostel Where You Can Meet People From Around The World

At Itinere Hostel, we can offer you the best experience if you decide to come here to learn Spanish. Our owners are native Granadinos and can let you in on some of their top tips on what to do while you’re in the city. Our Spanish language school and hostel are in the same building, so getting to and from lessons is not too much of a commute!

A few weeks ago I arrived to Itinere to spend some days working. I was very exciting because I was going to be with some people that I didn’t meet before. And for my surprise Itinere and me discovered some great, fun people that we will always remember.

The first one to leave was Elisabeth, an intreped traveler, with bright eyes, eager to discover the world with a really tiny bag, were she can keep the most amazing things that you will ever see. At the moment we don’t know were she will be, but we are sure she will be ok, maybe riding a horse in some mysterious mountain in China? Anywhere, we send you huge hugs from here!!!

Yesterday, was a double hard day. Was the time to part for Greg and Kelsea. Another two “good things” that happend in Itinere.

With a huge backpack with wheels, Greg left Itinere leaving good friends behind, whom in the future he will see in Ireland perhaps?. A very interesting guy full of interesting things to talk about. The social smile, always ready to run activities with his “snap back”. The sleeping beauty I. By his side, the lovely Kelsea. The one like us, from the world, american-japanese-french-spanish sweetest girl in the world. Great chef with a lot of voices, and the spanish one was so beautiful! We would buy one “Little Kelsea” in miniature if we could.

Tomorrow we will say bye to Ylenia and Alex, while other people is coming.

We will miss the great red head Ylenia. The owner of this words that title this post. Crazy Ylenia, that gives us her huge energy everyday, the spanish teacher for all the others. The one that was looking for an experience and find out a family. And Alex, of course, great gentleman, “lovely sunshine”. The bound master of how to speak good english. The sleeping beauty II. In the way of this people, we found Leah too. Charming girl looking improve her spanish, the perfect piece for this kindred, which has extended until New Mexico.

To all this people Itinere has to give thanks, because we spend a great time together and we will waiting forward to see you again! To all the people that has to come in the future, we are avid to meet you!

Because Itinere is a place to remember, not just the place, but also the people and the experiences you will live.

Itinere says: “See you!” not a goodbye!

It has been some time since our last post, but now we are back! With the near end of the summer heat, we are ready to keep giving you information about whats going on in Itinere and Granada!

For our “come back online” we couldn’t choose better day as today. Today is the birthday of one of the members in our family… Happy Birthday Nabila!!!

And for the celebration, if you are in Granada we can HIGHLY (and never better said) go to Sierra Nevada and enjoy of one of the greatest festivals celebrated in the city: “Festival por todo lo alto“.

At 21,30h and for free you can have a great time dancing in the top of the mountain with the sound and rythm, of “Los Térmicos” and “Guadalupe Plata“, one of the best bands that have come out lately in Spain. From Jaén, the dirty garage rock with punk and surf air will drive crazy to the rock n’ roll’s lovers. Moreover, “Los Térmicos” with their last album “De sombras y de sueños” will make you enjoy of a great postmodernism, garage-powerpop-psicodelia-original-bizarre show.

Can you ask for more?

As I said, a great plan for you to discover an amazing and different view of the arabic city. And if you are not still here… what are you waiting for? COME TO ITINERE HOSTEL and do not miss!!!

And as I cannot resist, here I leave you a video of one of my Guadalupe’s favourites songs. Without much lyrics, Perico’s voice will make you loco!

This month is being a hard month, because we are not having too much guests coming to our place. And this fact could be a little bit frustrating and make us feeling a little bit down-hearted. But some details from our customers help us to keep on smiling. Today a korean guest thanks me our kindness at his departure and gave us a korean 1000won bill (note) as a present.

Even if we are not the best hostel in the city (we are doing our best), even if we don’t have all the facilities we would like to offer, the only thing we are always able to give you is our kind smile and our help in anything we can do. And I hope you appreciate it as we appreciate the kindness of our guests. Some of our guests are reeeally kind and other are not kind at all, but I really think that if you give you always receive.

Thank you very much Mingi C. for make me feel happy today.

Before starting a long journey we always think about what we’ll need during our quotidian life on the road. Bad idea. We have to ask ourselves what will we need, how heavy is it and how much does it cost. I explain it.

In example, I’m preparing a trip for a month to another continent travelling solo with my backpack. And maybe I’ll need a road map book of that continent, but… Am I sure that it’s worth to carry on with more than a kilogram just in case I’ll have to check some road. Well think about it. I’m travelling solo, backpack and with public transportation. Surely I won’t need it or maybe just once or twice in the whole month. In every city I’ll visit I will be able to find tourist information and free maps whatever I’ll go. So road map book, dismissed.

So every single thing we put in the backpack (or suitcase) has to pass this interrogation.

The three kings of “don’t forget”. Passport, money, tickets. The only three things that you can’t travel without. Of course when I say passport I mean documents, money includes CC and tickets are for train, flight, bus…

Changes of clothes. If I’m travelling for a month I’ll need at least 20 or 30 changes, but we can’t carry all of them, so we need to wash them somewhere and somehow. I’m staying maximum three at the same place, so I don’t need to worry about wearing the same T-shirt every two or three days, nobody will notice. Also I will take those T-shirts that are a bit used and I will throw out. And probably I’ll buy new ones with the picture of Taj-Majal or the Alhambra.
So I’ll bring with me 3 t-shirts probably one of them to be substituted by a brand new touristy t-shirt.

This works too with shorts and underwear.

A pair of jeans will be enough if we bring another thin trouser to be used in those occasions when we are required to dress up. When the jeans are in the laundry, we can be more elegant just in front the washing machine.

In the event of cold weather, I always used the onion method. I take with me a thin sweatshirt and a plastic raincoat. Under the both, one or two t-shirts. It works. When travelling sometimes I was freezing and I had not enough clothes to wear. I’ll tell you a trick, put some sheets of a newspaper in between your textile onion layers and you will see.

Shoes. Don’t forget your sandals; showers out there are not always that clean!!! After that I’ll choose a pair of comfy sneakers that are not very colorful, to be joined to the dress up set. And that’s it. But remember wash your feet and used fresh socks everyday.

Towel. I normally take one of those tiny and super absorbent towels that are sold for swimming. but you can also use this

Gadgets. I’m an amateur photographer so I’m always carrying a heavy load of photo material. But if I weren’t I would take a good compact camera and a cell phone with Wi-Fi.

Others good tips:

Making a copy of your documents and a list of embassies and contact numbers. Put them in a different bag of the originals.

A guide book or a part of it. Carrying the Europe Lonely Planet if you’re just visiting France, Spain and Portugal… mmm.

Travel assurance.

Music player (cell phone could do it).

Remember make your backpack light and compact. It’s better to regret one day of a missing stuff that regretting twenty nine days of a heavy one.

Well, now we’re ready to go. I wish I could make my backpack very soon, but until that I’ll enjoy the perfect weather of Granada now. It’s not hot like in August, but not so cold like in December. Come to visit us.
